Released four years after the massacre in 2003, Van Sant created an eerie, dream-like portrayal of the events. One of these portrayals was Gus Van Sant’s Elephant – a film titled after an Alan Clarke short film from 1989 depicting “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland. “Directors will be fighting over this story”, Klebold gushes in one of the Basement Tapes. Committing a suicide in the library as the grand finale, the perpetrators created a real-life Shakespearean tragedy. Leaving 13 people dead and 24 wounded, the twosome scripted an hour-long tragedy that became the beacon of teenage violence in America.
To Klebold and Harris, the two protagonists became a representation of redemption claiming their rightful place as the undisputable heroes of the story. Two teenagers, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, took upon the roles of Mickey and Mallory from the 1994 Oliver Stone film Natural Born Killers. On 20th of April 1999 this surrealist notion took a more literal form in the city of Columbine in Colorado in the United States. “We possess art lest we perish of the truth.” Friedrich Nietzche “Abolish art, abolish daily life abolish the separation between art and daily life.” This is what the Surrealist movement swore upon as they rallied for the segregation between dream and reality to be abolished in favor of an absolute reality that intertwined art and reality.
